Columbus Guitar Society November news
by cgs
Hola laddies and lasses,
![]() |
I would ordinarily wait until November has arrived to drop this note, but I wanted to give better than one week’s warning to inform you that…
French guitarist Thomas Viloteau, 2006 Guitar Foundation of America international competition champion, will perform for the Columbus Guitar Society at 8 pm, 3 November 2007 at Capital University’s Huntington Recital Hall in Bexley. Thomas is a product of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris and mentor Roland Dyens, and he obviously sports some serious chops. The grapevine says he’s been selling out of his CDs this tour, and I’m really looking forward to hearing his eclectic program live. General admission is a trifling $18 at the door (only $12 for members, students, or seniors). Tickets can be obtained at the door, via Ticketmaster.com, or from the CAPA ticket office: 614-469-0939 (discounted tickets can only be obtained at the door). |
The next informal meeting of the CGS falls 1:00 pm ’til whenever on 17 November. As always, come on out to play some “classical” music on your guitar (…guitarra, chitarra, gitarre, guitare, lute, laud, luth, laute, liuto, archlute, arcileuto, theorbo, colascione, gallichon, mandora, mandore, mandolino, mandoline, mandolin, bandolim, or whatever) or just casually socialize and listen. As always, we’ll be at the Borders Books, Music & Cafe, 4545 Kenny Rd., Columbus, OH, 43220 (at the intersection of Kenny and Henderson Rds). If you may be up for plucking a few notes but are feeling just a little intimidated, fear not! The setting is casual and supportive in the extreme. I enjoy these and would enjoy your company there. C’mon out.
Some of you may know, there is an effort afoot to launch a mandolin orchestra right here in Columbus and aptly titled The Columbus Mandolin Orchestra. Such an ensemble needs battalions of mandolins, alto mandolas (aka, mandolas), tenor mandolas (aka, octave mandolins), mandoloncellos (aka, mando-cellos), basses/mando-basses, and even classical guitars. If interested, contact Keenan Wade. So far, I have managed to find myself out of town on business for every one of their rehearsals, those now falling 1-3 pm on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month, Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2070 Ridgecliff Road, Columbus, OH 43221. I’m planning to make my first on 18 November. See you there?
Finally, don’t forget that our own Karl Wohlwend has made 7:30 pm on the last Wednesday of every month a regular classical guitar gig at a fine Spanish-style tapas eatery, the Maca Cafe, 5 S. Liberty Street, Powell, OH 43065. See you there as October wraps on Halloween? …Then again 28 November?
Pluck on,
Eugene

From our reporter in the field, Joe Ricci:
Mean ‘Gene (and for the rest of ya, if interested):
As promised, here’s Mr. Carlos Perez’s program from his Tuesday, October 16 concert at the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute -
Joaquin Rodrigo: Zarabanda Lejan, En Los Trigales, Pequena Sevillana
Emilio Pujol: Canto de otono, Paisaje, Seguidilla
Joaquin Rodrigo: Tocata
Isaac Albeniz: Cadiz, Granada, Castilla
Jose Vinas: El Lamento, Op. 38
Joaquin Rodrigo: Tres Piezas Espanolas - Fandango, Passacaglia, Zapateado
(Encore) Antonio Lauro: Joropa
As you can see, it was primarily a tribute to Rodrigo (which is how he’s billing his current U.S. tour).
The room in which they held the concert sucked: it overlooked Park Avenue and the concert was between 6 and 7:45 PM (the latter part of NYC’s evening rush). Suffice it to say, we had motorcycles, buses, taxis and sirens contributing to the show. As usual, Mr. Perez seemed completely unfazed and gave a command performance.
He seemed very happy to see me and we talked for awhile. He said “hi” to all and commented he would have to get in touch with Matanya.
