The Columbus Guitar Society

The Columbus Guitar Society, founded by a dedicated group of amateur classical guitarists in 1992, has grown to be one of the country’s most successful guitar societies. Under the leadership of Artistic Director, Eugene Braig, the CGS is the only organization to offer comprehensive programming for the classical guitar in the Central Ohio region. CGS brings a variety of activities to the public:

1. A professional concert series featuring world-renowned international stars. The season offers a handful of amazing concerts between October and May. Click here for details.

2. The Members’ Ensemble prepares two concerts each season. Click here for details.

3. Amateur players meet up and entertain the cafe crowd at 1 p.m. on the third Saturday of every month at the Starbuck’s Coffee, 2450 East Main Street, in Bexley.

Professor Clare Callahan’s ensemble always represents some of the finest up-and-coming talent in the region. Participants in the program go on to become active guitar professionals across the country. The UC-CCM Guitar Ensemble will grace us with a diverse and interesting program of ensemble music and solos again this season. We are delighted to have them again on our series!

Upcoming Concerts:

Xuefei Yang, born in Beijing and now a Fellow of the UK’s Royal Academy of Music, is acclaimed as one of the world’s finest guitarists, having performed concerts in 40 countries at the world’s most prestigious venues—Wigmore Hall, London; Philharmonie, Berlin; Concertgebouw, Amsterdam; Konzerthaus, Vienna; National Auditorium, Madrid; Dvorak Hall, Prague; Carnegie Hall & Lincoln Center, New York; and the main venues of Asia. She now records exclusively for EMI Classics. We are beyond excited for Fei’s return to Columbus, 30 January 2016!

Dimitri Illarionov is an award winner at more than 20 international guitar competitions, including two of the most prestigious in the world—the GFA (USA) and Tarrega (Spain); at the latter, he was the first Russian winner in its 42-year history. Boris Andrianov won the bronze medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition, First prize at the International Janigro Cello Competition, and was the first Russian cellist to become a laureate at the International Rostropovich competition. Their album Classical Duo was nominated for a 2004 Grammy! Dima makes his triumphant return to our stage—bringing Boris along for the ride—on 27 February 2016.

British-born Stanley Yates has been described as “one of an elite breed of guitarists” (Classical Guitar Magazine) and enjoys an international career as concert performer and recording artist, teacher, arranger, and scholar. His recordings and editions are widely acclaimed. Karl Wohlwend is Columbus’ very own workaholic of the guitar, having performed across North America, in Europe and Asia in every imaginable style and setting. Karl currently directs the guitar program at Otterbein University. Two of our favorite guest artists from the past return to the CGS together in support of their new recording of Classical-era guitar duos on 23 April 2016.
