We stray (just a little!) from formal, traditional classical recitals in our post season. This year we feature the extraordinary Michael Chapdelaine, the only guitarist ever to win First Prizes in the world’s top competitions in both classical and fingerstyle genres: the Guitar Foundation of America International Classical Guitar Competition and the National Fingerstyle Championship at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. From New York’s Lincoln Center to the Cactus Café in Austin, from Milano to Bangkok, Michael continues to enchant, dazzle, and surprise audiences and critics alike as he redefines the modern acoustic guitar with his amazing technique, soulful expressiveness, and versatility as a performer, composer, and arranger/producer. His performances, played on both steel-string and classical guitars, include musical styles ranging from blues to Bach to country to rhythm ‘n’ blues as he wins his audiences’ hearts with breath-taking technique and the poetic magic of his original musical portraits and landscapes. Join us for what promises to be a hugely eclectic and diverse set.
As always, you are cordially invited!

The guitar’s cultural center of the universe (or at least approximately geographically within Ohio), Columbus:
First, thanks to Stanley Yates and the Cavani Quartet as well as CityMusic for working with the Columbus Guitar Society (CGS) to put on a tremendously artful and well-received concert this past Sunday, 12 October. Tremendous! I hope we can bring more collaborations like this to fruition in the future.
The next informal meeting of the CGS falls at 1:00 pm on 18 October. Come on out to play some “classical” music on your guitar or kin…or just casually socialize and listen. As always, we’ll be at the Borders Books, Music & Cafe, 4545 Kenny Rd., Columbus, OH, 43220 (at the intersection of Kenny and Henderson Rds). Also as always, the setting is casual and supportive in the extreme. Don’t be shy now; feel free to pluck at something.
Our own Karl Wohlwend will be back onto his regularly scheduled classical gigs the evening of Wednesday, 29 October at Maca Cafe, 5 S. Liberty Street, Powell, OH 43065. The music is soulful and the company on hand is always great.
A few from the road:
Not quite strictly classical, but The Greater Cincinnati Performing Arts Society will present the Grammy nominated California Guitar Trio 7:30 pm, Sunday, 19 October, McAuley Performing Arts Center, 6000 Oakwood Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45224. With a whirlwind of instrumental styles fusing classical, rock, blues, jazz, world music, progressive, as well as the quintessential California musical genre surf music, the California Guitar Trio’s stunning virtuosity and sly sense of humor have earned them an enthusiastic following and wide notoriety, with significant crossover in the progressive, acoustic and classical music scenes. Tickets for the show are $25 in advance $30 the day of the show and can be purchased on the Greater Cincinnati Performing Arts Society’s website at http://www.gcparts.org or call 513-484-0157 for information.
The Cleveland Classical Guitar Society in Cooperation with the Cleveland Music School Settlement presents classical guitar virtuoso Daniel Lippel in concert, 7:00 pm, Monday, 27 October, Cleveland Music School Settlement, Glick Recital Hall, 11125 Magnolia Drive, Cleveland, Ohio 44106. Admission is by free-will offering, so feel free to attend and make an offering to help support the excellent efforts of this excellent organization. Also not quite strictly classical, but acoustic guitarist Phil Keaggy will be performing at the Canal Street Tavern in Dayton 8:00 pm (doors open at 7:00), 26 October, tickets $20. Keaggy is veteran player and composer, and a real treat to hear (as stated by the correct Jim McCutcheon of Dayton). More info at www.canalstreettavern.com
The University of Dayton is presenting the Brasil Guitar Duo on 30 October. There will be a meet-&-greet session at 3:00 pm, Sears Recital Hall (limited seating, free admission): guitarists João Luiz & Douglas Lora will talk about their backgrounds, demonstrate technique, and discuss the musical traditions upon which they draw. They will perform in concert at 8:00 pm, Sears Recital Hall, Tickets: $9 for students; $16 for UD faculty, staff, & alumni; $18 General Admission. Come experience the expert fingering, mastery of Brazilian rhythms, and innovative compositions that have made the Brasil Guitar Duo highly sought after. A few pending temptations:
November will bring the masterful Chilean guitar virtuoso Carlos Pérez to Columbus as well as the popular Douglas Neidt and the veteran Maestro Göran Söllscher to Cincinnati. Stay tuned! …whether you use tension pegs or geared machines. (Feel free to giggle at my brilliant punnery.)
So get out your ’70s-style CB handles (I shall be “Strung with Gut”) and “Keep on pluckin’!”
