Columbus Guitar Society November news

by cgs

header.jpg

Hola laddies and lasses,

Thomas Viloteau I would ordinarily wait until November has arrived to drop this note, but I wanted to give better than one week’s warning to inform you that…

French guitarist Thomas Viloteau, 2006 Guitar Foundation of America international competition champion, will perform for the Columbus Guitar Society at 8 pm, 3 November 2007 at Capital University’s Huntington Recital Hall in Bexley. Thomas is a product of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris and mentor Roland Dyens, and he obviously sports some serious chops. The grapevine says he’s been selling out of his CDs this tour, and I’m really looking forward to hearing his eclectic program live. General admission is a trifling $18 at the door (only $12 for members, students, or seniors). Tickets can be obtained at the door, via Ticketmaster.com, or from the CAPA ticket office: 614-469-0939 (discounted tickets can only be obtained at the door).

The next informal meeting of the CGS falls 1:00 pm ’til whenever on 17 November. As always, come on out to play some “classical” music on your guitar (…guitarra, chitarra, gitarre, guitare, lute, laud, luth, laute, liuto, archlute, arcileuto, theorbo, colascione, gallichon, mandora, mandore, mandolino, mandoline, mandolin, bandolim, or whatever) or just casually socialize and listen. As always, we’ll be at the Borders Books, Music & Cafe, 4545 Kenny Rd., Columbus, OH, 43220 (at the intersection of Kenny and Henderson Rds). If you may be up for plucking a few notes but are feeling just a little intimidated, fear not! The setting is casual and supportive in the extreme. I enjoy these and would enjoy your company there. C’mon out.

Some of you may know, there is an effort afoot to launch a mandolin orchestra right here in Columbus and aptly titled The Columbus Mandolin Orchestra. Such an ensemble needs battalions of mandolins, alto mandolas (aka, mandolas), tenor mandolas (aka, octave mandolins), mandoloncellos (aka, mando-cellos), basses/mando-basses, and even classical guitars. If interested, contact Keenan Wade. So far, I have managed to find myself out of town on business for every one of their rehearsals, those now falling 1-3 pm on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month, Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2070 Ridgecliff Road, Columbus, OH 43221. I’m planning to make my first on 18 November. See you there?

Finally, don’t forget that our own Karl Wohlwend has made 7:30 pm on the last Wednesday of every month a regular classical guitar gig at a fine Spanish-style tapas eatery, the Maca Cafe, 5 S. Liberty Street, Powell, OH 43065. See you there as October wraps on Halloween? …Then again 28 November?

Pluck on,
Eugene

Gary Demos is a luthier located in Columbus, Ohio. He has been an accomplished carpenter and craftsman for over 30 years. Gary has made harps, dulcimers, and classical and steel string guitars.

His “day-job” is president of Dave Fox Remodeling. He built his first guitar in 1992 along with 3 harps and 3 dulcimers. He got back into guitar building last summer (of 2006).

Recent comments on his work - “hi, I love it…the only thing it needs is a protective shield to prevent scratches…am very happy with it…the sound is reonant and warm at the same time…very good projection….this guitar is a piece of art….I won Ramirez A1, Carrilo guitars, contreras…and hermano conde’s…this one is up there when it comes to the sound and playability, however it’s much more beautiful and well made instrument the the others…. I was lucky to get it for this price…..good job, let me know if you make different models, I will definately be interested.
thanks”

October Columbus Guitar Society News

by cgs

My heartfelt greetings extended to fellow lovers of pluck:

Eugene Braig I’m excited to inform you that the 17th concert season of the Columbus Guitar Society will officially launch at 8 pm, 20 October with a recital by the stylish Castellani-Andriaccio Duo. They are counted amongst the elite chamber ensembles on the music scene today, having garnered international critical praise, sitting as co-Directors of the Falletta Guitar Concerto Competition, and as long-time Artists-in-Residence at the prestigious Chautauqua Institution. Their nine recordings on Etcetera and their own Fleur de Son Classics place them amongst the more prolific guitar ensembles, and their Danzas and More CD was named “Best of the Year” by American Record Guide. General admission is only $18 at the door

(a trifling $12 for members, students, or seniors). General admission tickets can be obtained at the door, via Ticketmaster.com, or by from the CAPA ticket office: 614-469-0939. Discounted tickets can only be obtained at the door.

I want to remind you that you can preorder the four professional dates on the 2007-08 CGS series at the discount rate of $48 total (saving a full 1/3, $24 from the general admission rate) up to 20 October by calling or visiting the CAPA ticket office: again, 614-469-0939. Please take advantage of this system so that it becomes profitable for us to use (or so we at least recoup our expenses in using it), and please spread word of its availability.

The next informal meeting of the CGS falls earlier that very day, 1:00 pm on 20 October 2007. Come on out to play some “classical” music on your guitar or kin…or just casually socialize and listen. As always, we’ll be at the Borders Books, Music & Cafe, 4545 Kenny Rd., Columbus, OH, 43220 (at the intersection of Kenny and Henderson Rds). Also as always, the setting is casual and supportive in the extreme. Don’t be shy now; feel free to pluck at something. …And who knows, maybe I can persuade Joanne Castellani and/or Michael Andriaccio to join us briefly.

Earlier this month, 8 pm (pre-concert lecture at 7:30 pm), 12 October, renowned lutenist and Dorian recording artist Ronn McFarlane will be opening the Early Music in Columbus concert series in Capital University’s Mees Auditorium. See the Early Music site for details. I’ll be there. Feel free to join me.

Finally, our own Karl Wohlwend has made 7:30 pm on the last Wednesday of every month a regular classical guitar gig at Maca Cafe, 5 S. Liberty Street, Powell, OH 43065. See you there come Halloween?

Best wishes,
Eugene

Message from our leader

Fellow Pluckers:

My last confirmed wedding gig of the season was cancelled, so I’m going fishing this weekend! Celebrate with me, brethren and sistren in pluckitude. Still a remote tentative in mid September, but no confirmation.

Mr. Karl Wohlwend will be providing delicious ambience to delicious chow at the Maca Cafe, a great tapas eatery at 5 S. Liberty Street in Powell tomorrow night, Wednesday, August 29 from 7:30-9:30. I don’t know if I can break free for dinner, but may try. Feel free to call me to find out if I can make it, and perhaps we can all sup in support of live plucked music. Here’s a Dispatch Article about the place.

Eugene Braig of the Columbus Guitar Society

The next informal meeting of the CGS falls at 1:00 pm on 15 September 2007.

Of course, later that very day is the annual members’ concert, A Summer Evening of Guitar Music, 8 pm, 15 September 2007, Huntington Recital Hall, Capital University. This is our annual pre-season fund raiser. Admission is $5. If you’re playing there (as I am), I’m certain you’re also telling all your family and friends to attend.

It’s been a little while in coming, but I’ve been working with CAPA to get our tickets available for pre-sale. Ticket prices for the professional series are going up slightly for the 2007-08 season (at $18 general admission and $12 for students/seniors/members, I still think it’s one of the best entertainment values in Cow-town). Tickets will be available in advance via the CAPA ticket office (614-469-0939) or Ticketmaster.com approximately one month before each concert. In addition, you can preorder the four professional dates on the series at the discount rate of $48 total (saving $24 from the general admission rate) up to 20 October. Please take advantage of this system so that it becomes profitable for us to use (or so we at least recoup our expenses in using it), and please spread word of its availability. To whet the appetite, the professional dates on the 2007-08 season:

20 October 2007: Castellani & Andriaccio Duo
3 November 2007: Thomas Viloteau, GFA Victory Tour
9 February 2008: Xuefei Yang, guitar virtuoso
5 April 2008: Robert Gruca, classical guitarist

In addition, there will be the two members’ concerts (as always), the University of Cincinnati-CCM Guitar Ensemble will be performing on 26 January 2008, and we are working to add an exciting and slightly off-our-beaten-path, post-season fund-raising concert in June. More on that as details are finalized.

Also a long time coming, WOSU 89.7 FM is working to tentatively give us a segment for a pre-season preview on Music in Mid-Ohio in October. It is possible we may also get excerpts of our professional concerts broadcast in their new format. More on that as details unfold as well.

I look forward to seeing you all there.

Xuefei Yang at Cleveland Guitar Weekend

by cgs

Xuefei Yang at Cleveland Guitar Weekend

How often does this happen? During intermission at the Jason Vieaux show, ‘Gene popped out his new old 19th Century guitar and was showing it off to Mr. Isla and then along comes some young lady who wanted to give it a shot. Lucky for me, I didn’t go ahead and ask her if she was student of Jason Vieaux’s. Turned out ’twas a performer on our CGS program next year as well as the featured performer of the Cleveland Guitar Weekend Jamboree and Hoot’n'Nanny - a Miss Xuefei Yang. She even suggested that someone take a picture. Well, careful what you wish for - call me Johnny on the Spot. I bet ‘Gene was glad I kept my mouth shut.
